honey love

On Saturday I’ll be spending the morning in Wooster, Ohio at the Tri-County Beekeepers’ Association Spring Beekeeping Workshop.  I’ve been asked to be one of the judges of the honey recipe contest. I’m very excited to taste some delicious items made with local honey.

I enjoy recipes that include honey and have featured several here on the blog.  Here are a few:

tiny flower thursday & more

I spent my lunch hour on Wednesday walking around the outside of the building with my camera. That’s where all of these photos are from. Either the grounds around the Library or from the top floor of the parking deck. Downtown Akron was gorgeous this day.

A little jem of a flower from our Sunday afternoon hike along the Towpath Trail. Enjoy your day, the week’s almost over. What do you do or think about to get you through the end of a long work week?

school days

My delightfully wonderful partner reminded me today that it’s been some time since I updated the old blog. So here goes.

I’ve been intrigued by the demolition of one of the elementary schools in Tallmadge. It’s right off the Tallmadge Circle. As a kid, I remember seeing the tiled mural on the front as my dad took my sister and I to visit our grandparents who lived in an apartment complex right next to the school. I was always drawn to the mural. Well it doesn’t seem like that mural and school have much more time. Here are a few more photos of my visit to the demolition site. I like how the one photograph shows all the different blocks of color from several rooms of the school that are now exposed.  I wanted to get a closer look and better shot of this wall, but I didn’t suppose they wanted some guy just walking around the site. And me without my steel-toed boots.

falls

Greg and I hiked 3.5 miles through the Sand Run Metro Park on Sunday morning. With temps in the high 50′s it felt like the end of summer and the beginning of fall.  A transition that I look forward to every year.

On a separate note, we are so fortunate to live in a community with such a great and diverse park system. It’s one of the things that Greg appreciates most about moving to, and living in, the Akron area. And this year, we will finally complete the Fall Hiking Spree and earn our staff and shield. We’ve been after them for nearly a decade now, and always come just a few trails short. Anyone else want to join us?

storycorps

StoryCorps is back at Main Library. This time with their MobileBooth, an Airstream trailer outfitted with a recording studio that travels the country year-round collecting stories. Not familiar with StoryCorps?  Here’s a brief description from their web site: Since 2003, tens of thousands of everyday people have interviewed family and friends through StoryCorps. Each conversation is recorded on a free CD to take home and share, and is archived for generations to come at the Library of Congress. Millions listen to their award-winning broadcasts on public radio and the Internet. These stories can be heard locally every Friday on NPR’s Morning Edition broadcast on 89.7 WKSU. StoryCorps is one of the largest oral history projects of its kind, creating a growing portrait of who we really are as Americans.

Here’s a link with a radio story about StoryCorps visit to Akron.

withbarn

I spent a delightful evening on Wednesday with a herd of local Suri alpacas.  Many of them owned by Marie, a volunteer with the Friends of Main Library. Marie has been raising these wonderful animals for the last six years. She was very generous with her time in letting me tour the farm. When I entered the barn the first thing you see is a chalkboard with a list of the recently born and the expectant mothers. Be sure to check out the names of the newborns. I think there may be a Coldplay fan there. When I met the Alpacas, they were very friendly and quite inquisitive. I was surprised by how many came right up to me. Some were very interested in my camera. They weren’t camera shy at all. I have to say, spending time with these animals is quite relaxing.  They have a very distinct hum and a calmness that puts you at ease. For more information about Suri alpacas visit www.SuriNetwork.org.
