remembering
10 years ago I was at work when I heard of the terrible tragedies. I was working a half day, because I was supposed to pick my dad up at the airport that afternoon for his fall visit. Needless to say, his flight didn’t leave Tampa that day.
The emotional toll of that day solidified plans that Greg and I would move our relationship forward from a long distance relationship to sharing a home together. It was a reminder that life is so short and unpredictable. Two months after that September day, Greg and I began our life together as a family.
The photograph is from the 5th year anniversary of September 11th in 2006 at Goodyear Metropark in Akron.
five senses friday
- seeing - the herbs in my potted garden thriving. And yes, I know that I probably shouldn’t allow the garlic chives to flower, but I just couldn’t resist those beautiful little white blossoms. The bees have been quite fond of them, as well.
- tasting - the club ciabatta sandwich at The Creperie. Why do sandwiches always taste better when someone else makes them? Because they use crispy fried prosciutto, that’s why.
- hearing - cheers for my niece’s volleyball team. Very proud Uncle, here.
- smelling – the unpleasant scent of tomato plant on my hands after picking.
- feeling – hot and muggy. I need a fall-like-sweater-vest-wearing-day soon.
How would you sum up your last week in 5 senses or less? Please share in the comments section. Hope you have a swell weekend. We have an extra long weekend full of several visits with dear friends and a visit from the cable installation guy.
spring seedlings
Late last week I had the opportunity to escape from the curse of this very long winter. I spent some time at the Crown Point Ecology Center in Bath, Ohio. Greg and I are CSA members this year, and I’m doing some volunteer work on the center’s marketing committee. I wanted to get some photographs of the progress that Tim and Whitney are making on getting the plants ready for this Spring’s organic plant sale. As I walked through the warm greenhouse, I was excited to see all of the green. Including the tiny 3-week old artichoke plants. There were lots of lettuce, onions and grasses sprouting. I counted several varieties of thyme including orange, German and summer. The beginnings of great rosemary plants were also peaking just above the potting soil. If you are in the Akron area in May, be sure to mark your calendars for the plant sale. The organic plant sale is May 14 & 15, 9:00-4:00PM (Sat) 11:00-3:00PM (Sun). Last year I purchased several herbs, tomato plants and peppers.
Enjoying my blog? I hope that you’ll consider becoming a fan on facebook or that you’ll follow me on twitter. It would mean the world to me.
five senses friday #11
Here’s my little week in just five senses. I hope you’ll share some of your five senses in the comment section. Enjoy your weekend.
- seeing: the tops of lots of buildings in downtown akron.
- tasting: smoked goat cheese from the Ornery Goat that we picked up at the farmer’s market in kent.
- hearing: for the price of a cup of tea by Belle and Sabastian (thanks for the recommendation Greg).
- smelling: triple citrus cupcakes fresh out of the oven.
- feeling: better about myself after getting out and doing a bit of hiking this week. nearly 5.5 miles.
PS & BTW, I’m kind of in love with the patterns and colors of the shingles on the church steeple below.
foggy morning hikes
On Sunday Greg and I ventured out into the foggy morning to the Cuyahoga Valley National Park to hike a couple trails and take some pictures. Have I mentioned how lucky we are in Akron to have a National Park right at our front door step? It’s a great thing. The photo above is from Horseshoe Pond. We were fortunate to be greeted by one of the majestic blue herons at the water’s edge. We even got to watch it catch a fish for breakfast.
After our visit at the pond, we travelled up the road to the Ira Trailhead and walked the boardwalk above the murky marshes. There were lots of folks out taking pictures, riding bikes and walking dogs. Some really big dogs. Throughout the walk we were serenaded by a deep chorus of frog songs. Only problem, we couldn’t spot a frog. And Greg was really looking.
A little further distance from the marshes we visited Summit County’s only remaining covered bridge.
Fun fact we learned today: The Cuyahoga River twists and turns for about a distance of 90 miles. But from the start of the river to its end at Lake Erie is only a 30 mile straight shot. It truly is the “crooked river.”
Author’s note: As I was writing this post on Sunday afternoon, Greg made for me the most wonderful iced coffee beverage. I’m incredibly lucky.
a perfect morning
I don’t think that there could have been a more magical and perfect place to be this morning than the annual organic plant sale at the Crown Point Ecology Center. It was our first visit there, and most certainly not our last. The large red barn was filled with a huge variety of vegetable, herb and flower plants that were organically raised on-site at the farm. I picked up five varieties of tomatoes, a pepper plant, three types of basil and some chive and thyme plants. I’m looking forward to my own mini summer harvest. After visiting the farm we headed further down in to the valley for a delightful lunch on the patio of Pub Bricco. Such a perfect spring morning and afternoon. Looking forward to dinner with friends this evening. Hope you are enjoying your weekend, what kind of plans do you have?
